Sometimes, the most profound changes begin not in a boardroom, but in the quiet solitude of a cold night, driven by a single, compelling idea that evolves into a powerful plan. For me, that moment came on the cool night of December 31, 2020. As the world prepared to welcome a new year, I was engrossed in preparing a presentation—a presentation I believed held the key to a new economic chapter for Pakistan.
That presentation was about unlocking the potential of Cannabis Sativa. The vision was to create a regulated, scientific, and economically beneficial industry for the nation. You will soon hear the words, hemp, CBD and CBG often.
On January 1, 2021, in a meeting room filled with the country's most influential decision-makers, I presented this vision. At the table were the then Prime Minister of Pakistan, the Minister of Health, several other relevant ministers, the DG of Narcotics, the CEO of DRAP, and the Chief Secretary, among other key officials. In that room, an idea met opportunity. The concept was met with unanimous support.
I have watched the seeds planted in that meeting grow. I have seen the establishment of a Cannabis Control Authority, the passing of statutory laws in 2024 to govern cultivation, and our provincial research councils (PCSIRs) beginning to grow the nation's first legal crops.
But while this national journey took its course, I felt a pull toward a different, more innovative path. I began to ask: What if we could bypass the agricultural challenges entirely? This led me down a new path: a wild idea, a departure from the norm, but true innovation often is.
